Money – a sideshow at Loughborough Fair 2005

I think the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon was such a watershed – for contemporary music and for me personally when it was first released – I guess this is true for so many people of my generation.

I left school at fifteen and went to work to learn the trade of printing. The experience of having my own money - £8 for a 40 hour week – sent me quite crazy I think – I think this song – played over and over again made me sane again and I’ve never chased money since – not that £8 for a 40 hour week was extravagant even at 1970’s prices. I lived for some years (as a kid) at the end of a dirt lane in a caravan with my parents -surrounded by the south coast affluence of yachts, golf courses, smart cars and big houses – all things I’ve never wanted – when I went to University I read Herbert Marcuse and wanted these things even less – you know I really am very contented with just a camera in my hand! Of course it's all relative - I drive a car, own a house, have a good (enough) salary - but still think - wouldn't it be nice to be able to do this or that......that is luxury in itself....for so many having the financial means is a matter of absolute need.

A line or two from Wikipedia:

Dark Side of the Moon is a concept album. The album covers the faults of humanity and the pressures of modern life that can drive a man to insanity, including mortality, religion, money, the encroachment of old age, society and conflict.

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and your O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team
Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack.
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullsh*t
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet
Money it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away

"HuHuh! I was in the right!"
"Yes, absolutely in the right!"
"I certainly was in the right!"
"You was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a bruising!"
"Yeah!"
"Why does anyone do anything?"
"I don't know, I was really drunk at the time!"
"I was just telling him, he couldn't get into number 2. He was asking
why he wasn't coming up on freely, after I was yelling and screaming and telling him why he wasn't coming up on freely.
It came as a heavy blow, but we sorted the matter out"
