Time for a new workshop within a picture posting.

A few months ago I posted a picture of a close up of part of a much larger statue, cast in bronze, the statue is called The Spirit of New Orleans, and it stands in the Trafford Centre, a huge shopping complex on the outskirts of Manchester.

Here's another view, this time of the clarinet player.

Now the workshop bit, hands up those who've adjusted a poorly contrasted image and been a bit disappointed that highlights in the image tend to blow, leaving a general improvement that is marred by the blown areas, (probably most people.)

You DON'T have to put up with these unwanted blown out areas, if you are using Photoshop you can quickly restore the affected parts with the history brush, simply open the history pallette and tick the stage immediately prior to the contrast/curves/levels adjustment.

Then choose the history brush to paint back the original details, giving you the best of both worlds.

This is exactly what I did here, after using the levels adjuster the highlights on the face were very blown out, but with just a few brush strokes, taking little more than a minute to do, the end results giving much improved contrast without sacrificing the highlights.
