Photographer's Note
Good Morning Friends,
I have had a few requests to convert to black and white, so I trawled my archives and found this. I remember very clearly taking it!
We had gone to stay with friends, also keen photographers, and had decided to get up very early to photograph the sunrise. At a very early hour (which was a real effort!) only the two of us managed to make it to the beach!
We set up cameras and waited with keen anticipation! We waited ... we waited ... we waited! But the clouds came in thicker and they won! We never actually saw the sun rise!
Like true stalwarts, we photographed the pier, convincing early morning dog walkers that that had been our intention and then returned for a hearty English breakfast!
Thanks for your interest, have a lovely day, Bev :-)
Sorry, as I have just come to scrutinise it, I have noticed a slight tilt to the sea. I can only put it down to lack of sleep and disappointment!

Hello Bev,
shame about the sunrise, the same thing happened to us on a visit to the Sahara some time ago,all dust, no sun.
With some lovely graphic lines the pier makes a good subject for your mono treatment, the composition is strong and the sky interesting, pity about the slight tilt but we`ve all done that.
Kind regards from a rather dull Devon,
Les.

"We can't always get what we want………." (Stones), but this isn't such a bad shot after all, and the clouds probably make this more interesting in B&W, adding some texture to the sky.
It must have been a lovely noise that day, those waves crashing onto the pier legs;….. lucky you.
All the best Bev

Hello Bev,
Pity about the lack of a sunrise, but you have still been able to create a dramatic composition. The pier is well framed and provides strong graphical lines. Good detail in the clouds irrespective of the lack of sun. Very good conversion to black and white.

Hi Beverley. When that happens the best thing is to convert the image to B&W. The structure is showcased nicely against the grey of sky and water and the reflections add interest to the foreground and extend the verticals.

Hi, Bev ;)
Sometime the black-n-white photos are more interesting than picturesque and colorful examples. Well done, excellent minimalist composition and perfect sharpness, fine DoF for f/4.5.
Best wishes,

Hello Bev
an arty take this! Don't you just hate it when you post a shot and then see something that you didn't spot before. Despite the horizon this makes for such a good B&W subject. Lots of wonderfully converging lines and an echo on the sand to add to the impact.
Went on a shoot yesterday and it started off cloudless but the further I walked up the river inland the cloudier it got. Just hope this new Met Office computer gives us better weather forecasts. Fat chance eh!
Brian.

Hi Bev,
An image that perfectly suits B&W. A strong graphical composition. I have come to love wet and cloudy days for photography in preference to cloudless sunny days. I didn't notice the tilt until I read your note.
Warm regards,
Trevor

Bonjour Beverly,
J'aime beaucoup la construction de cette image. L'immense jetée donne une belle diagonale dans l'image et a un petit côté aérien et léger très intéressant. L'utilisation du noir et blanc donne un petit côté documentaire à l'ensemble.
Amicalement

Hello Bev,
By looking at this great photo I wouldn't remember that the weather and light could have been adverse. I have never been to that place, but I recognised it as soon as I saw it because I know it from some posts of feather, who put them in the gallery named Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
You chose a good POV and tamed well the light. The reflection on the wet sand below gives a special touch.
Regards, José.

Hello Bev,
I am sure the slight tilt is actually due to the tide ;-). It would have been worse if the pier had been tilted. It doesn't look like a great morning, but B&W beats the clouds and the effect is quite attractive. For those who love diagonals the pier offers a lot to watch. The white surf looks quite dramatic but not very inviting.
Kind regards,
Gert

Yes, Beverly - the horizon always levels perfectly. But this is a minor issue here, because you had conveyed a special morning ambience, no sun but a well shown silhouettes of the wooden poles and the walkway on the pier.
The choice on B&W photo was fairly good decision considering the grey overcast.
Good evening,

Ciao Bev
Saluti

Hello Bev - I am a great fan of B&W especially when used for a well-chosen image. Your choice here is excellent I think. The distinctive graphic lines of the pier are all the more obvious than they would be in a colour shot (unless of course you had that marvelous sunset with a fiery sky and silhouetted structure). This to my mind is far more meaningful and paints a picture of gloomy desolation. I like that.
Well managed conversion
Warm regards

Hi Bev,
Your choice of B&W is very good here, the structures of the construction seems to be enhanced this way. A very well composed picture, even with the very slight tilt.
Kind regards

Hello Bev,
Great photo of this pier. Your POV shows its structure really well and the B&W works really wonderfully here in the cloudy weather.

Hello Bev, I thought at first that you went to Saltburn, but I see that it is archive photo. Excellent view of this long pier in the cloudy day.
It is a almost one year since my visit there. I met Mariusz in Middlesbrough and then we went to Saltburn to meet our friends Kath and Rob, just like you. But it was just a day after the winds and part of the pier was destroyed, so it was not possible to go there. Nice memories for me.

Hello Bev
Despite the lack of sun you still managed to get a good amount of contrast in this image - enough to make the scale from black to white and all in between visible. In that regard it is a well produced black and white. The composition is excellent to using the diagonal of the pier to lead the eye in and create depth. Technically accomplished shot.
Have a good day.

Hello Bev
I couldn't let a monochrome photograph from you go past without a comment, even if you did post it some days ago. I love the proper b/w contrast you've achieved. Beaten by the clouds maybe, but you've still managed an impressive, dramatic image. You're right about the horizon line!
