Photographer's Note
This is a shot of a woman who was playing the part of a dental assistant at a re-enactment of a medieval market in Chesterfield. The market is held annually and as well as the market there are street entertainers, knights of old re-enacting battle skirmishes in the grounds of the cathedral, a jester entertaining the crowds of children and a fun fair. Well worth a visit.
As dental assistants go, this woman is fierce and frightening. I recall John (Tyro) once saying that dentists were little more than butchers. Ironic, I thought, given that he is a surgeon!
This isn't the sharpest shot in the world but in the crowd and the moment it was the best I could do.
Enjoy.

Hello Michael,
This woman plays perfectly her role in the story, with the lips and open mouth.
An excellent portrait, sherp and clear.
Very well done,
Best regards,
John.

Hi Mike,
No, I don't think I ever said that dentists were butchers - I seem to recall that "sadists" was the term I used!
But this is a fine portrait of this lady you spotted at your mediaeval fair. Curiously, although she appears to be trying to appear like someone akin to Madame Defarge or an older version of Nurse Ratched, she does appear to have a certain natural kindliness in her face - those prominent laughter lines give away her true real-life character! And I'll be she was more than happy to have you take her picture.
A brilliant portrait, very well taken and with excellent details and clarity. And black and white is the perfect medium for this one.
Brilliant!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Mike
Brilliant portrait, I love the way you timed it to capture this particular expression. B&w a perfect choice of medium, I love the tonal range and the textures of her clothes.
On a different note - what is it about people still afraid of dentists in the age of anaesthetics?? ;-)
Best wishes
Kasia

Bonjour Michael,
Elle joue très bien son rôle cette dame. Elle fait littéralement peur comme assistante dentaire. Tu t.es rapproché vraiment très près. Belle utilisation du noir et blanc.
Bon dimanche

Hi Michael cool portrait, a woman scorned but a woman also playing at being scorned, there is a great sense hidden amusement in jet face. The photo does capture the sense of the time as this looks like a picture that could be in a history book. nicely caught portrait

Hello Mike,
Perfectly sharp enough for me, considering any kind of conditions, crowd or not. It's a delightful portrait with a good eye-contact with the woman making a rather funny face. I would probably have been terrified meeting her in the bad old days, knowing the horror that was waiting.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Mike, I looked at the miniature and wondered why she looks so angry. Dental assistant - well I would be afraid to go. We said in Polish dentysta-sadysta :). Luckily now it is not so bad with the injections. Good actress. And very good photographer :). Stunning expression, fantastic sharpness, we see her skin and hair so clearly.

Hello Mike,
This is one scary woman!
She looks as if she is modelling for her dentist!
And, with narrowed eyes, threatening those who don't respond!
A wonderful close-up, capturing facial details and, more importantly, a sense of character.
Have a great day,
Bev :-)
