Nils Holgerssen

In the late afternoon after our delightful rendezvous with Bev, Len and Claude, we drove to our hotel in Leasowe Castle, west of Liverpool on the Wirral Peninsula between the Mersey and Dee overlooking the Irish Sea.
After dinner there was still time for inspiring evening walks.

A flight of Canadian geese reminded me of the children's book “Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey” (Nils Holgersson's underbara resa genom Sverige) by Selma Lagerlöf.
The book is intended to teach children the geography of Sweden in a playful way.

In photo 2 you can see Nils on the neck of the leader of the geese group, Akka van Kebnekajse.

The geese in the 3 photos are Canadian geese (Branta canadensis) with a black head and neck, white cheeks, white under its chin, and a brown body. Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, its migration occasionally reaches northern Europe. It has been introduced to the United Kingdom and Ireland and is also regularly spotted in the Netherlands.
