Photographer's Note

'Family group' from the collection of Gertrude Benham.

"The origin of this carved and painted wooden figure group remains a mystery. Its style suggests that it comes from Congo, Central Africa, and that it depicts a European missionary family.
The woman whispers into her husband's ear while slipping her hand into his pocket."
(Info. museum notes)

Gertrude Benham (July 1867 - Feb 1938)
was an English explorer and mountaineer. Born in London, she was the youngest of 6 children and began climbing mountains as a girl.

She went on to climb mountains on almost every continent. She was also an intrepid hiker and walked from Valparaiso, Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
She went on to hike across Kenya and traverse Africa on foot.

She documented her treks in journals, sketches and photographs. Fortunately for Plymouth, (a few years prior to her death,) in 1934 Gertrude gave Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery its biggest world cultures collection gathered from nearly every country in what was then the British Empire.

She had landed in Plymouth in 1928 and was impressed with the museum.

She decided that it would be the ideal resting place for her collection which includes jewellery, costume and accessories, metal work, lacquer work, ceramics, toys and religious articles.
(Information from various sources.)

This piece was in a cabinet that displayed just a small selection from the collection.

I had never heard of Gertrude Benham before, so i was interested to learn more; what a lady!

The thin line at the top of the picture is the top of the cabinet, but I decided not to clone it out.

Thanks for looking.
