Photographer's Note

When I moved back from the USA to Europe, I could not get used to driving the very narrow streets here. People tell me, it is because you cannot widen the street in the old town, while in America the cities were build relatively recently so they could factor in wider streets. Well, many new neighbourhoods designed from scratch have now the extremely narrow roads to ensure “traffic calming”. Basically, they make driving more difficult, so people must slow down.
And I could never understand why there are no motorways straight to the centre of the town. Middlesbrough is exactly what I thought should happen: they should build a motorway above the roofs so that it can access the old town. That is what they did in Middlesbrough. I am not sure whose decision it was and how it developed over time. The unfortunate fact was that Middlesbrough had a rather small old town so after factoring in a motorway through its old part and above the roofs, not much was left from the old town. In fact, most of whatever was left from the old buildings was demolished now and there is just the motorway left and several isolated charming buildings around it. Meanwhile, the centre has moved to newer (although already bad looking and with no style) location.
I mention it all because this lovely square is actually squeezed in between the elevated motorway (not seen here because it is behind my back) and the railway tracks (behind these lovely buildings). So ironically, not many people actually find this square, it is so well hidden.

The statue presents Henry Bolckow (1806 - 1878), one of the founders of modern Middlesbrough. His company was probably the largest steel producer in the world. It was the steel from the company which he founded, which was shipped to build the famous Harbour Bridge in Sydney.
