Birthplace of Aphrodite, a photo from Paphos, Ouest

Photographer's Note

Aphrodite’s mythical birthplace ‘Petra tou Romiou’ is an interesting geological formation of huge rocks along one of the most beautiful coastlines on the island, located on the southwest coast of the Pafos (Paphos) district.

According to the legend, the Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty - Aphrodite - was born of the sea foam here. Legend tells that she rose from the waves and was escorted on a shell to this particular beach.

The giant rock formations, which are seen at the same location are linked with another - more recent - legend which tells that the Byzantine hero Digenis Akritas heaved them there to keep the Saracens Arabs (7th-10th centuries) at bay. The name of Petra tou Romiou (‘rock of the Greek’ in Greek) comes from the hero.

It is said that in certain weather conditions, the waves rise, break and form a column of water that dissolves into a pillar of foam. With imagination, this momentarily looks like an ephemeral, evanescent human shape. Other popular myths tell that swimming around the rock three times will bring various blessings, including eternal youth and beauty, good luck, fertility and true love.

Today we went for rather long trip to see this famous place

Hello Malgo,
That's the other side of the island where you're now.
Impressive rock formations on the beach as well as in the sea.
A beautiful bright picture with a nice contrast on the foreground between the white foam, the light coloured pebbles and the darker sand and stones.
I had expected that it would have been busier on this beach.

The rocks are nicely shaped and it's a very good photo. It's perfectly clear and sharp and the colours are perfect. But the myths surrounding this place sound like fake news to me. ;-)

About your note on China: Yunnan seems very appealing too, but China has enough places worth visiting for a lot of travelling.

ciesze sie ze pokazujesz te piekne miejsca a nie tylko kosze na smieci i kiczowate wesole miasteczka.
Jak moze pamietasz mam bardzo podobne zdjecie na TE TUTAJ, ale kazdy chce miec to znane miejsce w swojej galerii.
Czy zrobilas sobie zdjecie po drugiej stronie tego kamienia kapiac sie w pianie?
Ja mialem nadzieje wlasnie zrobic zdjecie stamtad ale byla tam kolejka Rosjanek ktore czekaly na okazje do zdjecia wiec zrezygnowalem.

A Afrodyta gdzie? Botticellego jeszcze tu nie było? Żarty żartami, ale zdjęcie piękne, po prostu piękne. Nie ma to jak dobra przyjazna pogoda, zdjęcia same się robią. PIękne te skałki w wodzie, no i ładnie spieniona woda.

PS. Samochód pod zamkiem w Reszku nie nasz, my nigdy nie parkujemy pod zabytkami. Zmorą architektury są auta, które zasłaniają architekturę, gwałcą ją, i to nie tylko w Polsce, ale w całej Europie. Ale po co ja Ci to piszę, wiesz przecież to doskonale.

A mitologia grega é um assunto muito interessante. Conhecia esse mito sobre o nascimento de Afrodite, mas não sabia do lugar. A luz da foto é excelente. As ondas trazem sensação de movimento. O céu sem nenhuma nuvem é bonito.
