Photographer's Note

It is said that arch was invented by Iranians during the Parthian Empire. There is no trace of any arch in a buidling left outside of Iran yet. None the less, historically True arches appeared as early as the 2nd millenium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture and in Persian ziggurats (see Chogha Zanbil) long before Parthian time. Ziggurat is still standing in the southwest of Iran. The arch then spread to Europe and was adopted by the Ancient Greeks, Etruscans, and Ancient Romans. The arch became an important technique in medieval European cathedral building as well as Islamic architecture. This arch belongs to 400 years and is standing in Esfahan.
