Photographer's Note

Ankara from Atakule - 1

Going through my digital archives, I came across a bunch of photos I had taken from Atakule back in 2006, when I made an extended weekend trip to Turkey to be at the wedding of my niece. They were taken behind dirty glass panes and when I downloaded them to the computer, I was not satisfied with their quality so I had written them off but did not have the heart to delete them. Now seven years later, I am finding out that they clean up very well with Photoshop. Unfortunately, it has been so long that I forget which direction the camera was pointing when I took them, so here is a generic birdseye view of Ankara. If anyone more familiar with Ankara can recognize any of the landmarks, I will be happy to change this note to write about that landmark.

Atakule is a 125m (410 feet) high communications and observation tower located in the Çankaya district of central Ankara and is one of the primary landmarks of the city. As the district of Çankaya is itself on a hill, the tower can be spotted from almost anywhere in the city during clear days and visitors to the tower can have a bird's eye view of the the whole city.

Benim dijital arşivleri elden geçirirken, 2006 yılında yeğenimin düğününde olmak için Türkiye'ye bir uzun hafta sonu gezisi sırasında, Atakule’den almış birkaç fotoğrafla karşılaştım. Kirli cam bölmeler arkasında alınmıştı ve bunları bilgisayara yüklediğim zaman, onların kalitesinden memnun kalmadım bu yüzden onları gözden çıkarmıştım ama içimden silmek gelmemişti. Şimdi yedi yıl sonra, onların Photoshop ile çok iyi temizlendiğini farkettim. Ne yazık ki, o kadar uzun vakit geçti ki ben onları çekerken fatoğraf makinesinin baktığı yönü unuttum o yüzden işte, Ankara'da bir genel kuşbakışı görünüm. Ankara ile daha fazla aşina olanlar nirengi noktalarından bazılarını tanıyabilirlerse, ben o nirengi noktası hakkında yazmak için bu notu değiştirmekten mutlu olurum.

Atakule, Ankara’nın merkezi Çankaya semtinde bulunan bir 125 m (410 ayak) yükseklikte iletişim ve gözetleme kulesi ve kentin başlıca nirengi noktalarından biridir. Çankaya semtinin kendisi bir tepede olduğu için, kule pussuz günlerde şehirde hemen hemen her yerden görülebilir ve kule ziyaretçileri bütün şehri kuşbakışı görebilirler.

Hello Murat,
Good bird's eye view of Ankara. Great DOF and POV. Good clarity, color and sharpness. I like the row of similar looking houses in the middle with their bright colored roofs. Well taken.

it is unbelievable that the shot was taken through glass.
The credit goes not to Photoshop only... the focus, composition and light management also noteworthy.

Hi Murat,
I love city view photos, and this one is excellent. The light and clarity is superb, the colors perfect. Excellent deep DOF, superb details. I like it very much. I was in Ankara once in my life, around 20 years ago, but I missed this excellent viewpoint. Very well done my friend.
By the way do you know that the coach name of our best soccer club, FC Basel is also Murat?

We do not have many Ankara photos on TE, nice contribution here.
Wide valley where the town built on, and fine clear day that provided a magnificent sharp details over the many buildings on picture.

You're capturing well this cityscape by a good angle, a good perspective and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interedyong and impressive to see a lot of lovely appartments with red roof and some high buildings which appears under its view.

Hi Murat,
Beautiful clear cityscape of Ankara. Looks like a densely populated area with blocks of apartments with lovely red roofs. Good pov and the tower block in the foreground is perfectly positioned in the frame. Nice lighting and sharpness allows the fine detail to show.

il tempo passa ed il progresso avanza. Quando io - qualche decina di anni fa - ho avuto occasione di visitare la città di Ankara nel cordo di un viaggio attraverso la Turchia l'unico punto di osservazione per vedere la città a volo di uccello era la cittadella e per fare delle riprese mi arrampicai pericolosamente sulle sue mura. Ora tutto è più semplice grazie alla presenza di questo grattacielo che permette di avere un notevole colpo d'0occhio sia sulla città che sugli immediati dintorni.
I colori sono molto belli e mi sembra che tu abbia fatto un eccellente lavoro di rtestauro.

Merhaba,
Sizin kareniz çok temiz, netlik ve ışık çok güzel. Şehrin kendisi ise bence göz tırmalayıcı iğrenç bir beton yığını. Türkiye cumhuriyeti'nin utanç kaynağı haline geldi..

A nice clear shot with good ambient light, tfs!
Regarding the city, for me it became a disgusting sea
of eye disturbing concrete.. Source of shame for Republic of Turkey since the last years..

a very rewarding and interesting view, presented with superb depth and perspective. The frame is full of details and attractive focal points. It's fascinating to see the buildings' size diminishing in the distance, the bright colours and superb clarity of the foreground fading into the mysterious background at the top of the frame. Hello Murat,

I only got to Ankara airport late at night so did not see much of the city. Looks like Erzurum on steroids! A superb high pov with excellent sharpness and nice warm cold color contrasts. The highrise building at left makes a good focal point. Tfs!
