Nostalgic trams at Istiklal Caddesi of Istanbul. In the early 1900's Istanbul had an extensive tramway system. But just like many other big cities, trams had to give way for car transport.
Trams made a comeback to this main shopping street in 1990, when Istiklal was converted to pedestrian street. Usually there's two old trams pendeling along the 1.6 km route, meeting in the middle. As the capacity of these vintage trams is limited the tram line has little importance as mass transport, but it is a charming feature as a tourist attraction and photo opportunity.

Hello Kari,
These old trams in the colours of the Turkish flag look so beautiful.
They must be a real eye-catcher in that shopping street. My visit of Istanbul dates from in the early 80-s. So I haven't seen them.
The view of both trams side by side looks a bit like the start of a race.

A very fine shot of these trams - they make a great pair in the sunshine, and I like the way you included the footpath scene on the left and some blue sky on the right. Excellent point of view, and I'm glad to see the right hand tram was not coming your way! We still have some very old trams in Melbourne, which are used for the same purposes, and also for regular duties on one or two of the many lines which we have here. They have been modified with sliding doors and new seats, but I remember that in my boyhood they had no doors at all and only beautiful polished wooden seats.

Your love for public transport shines through here not just in the quality of the photo but in the patience it took to wait for the right moment for these two to become twins. I saw these trams outside my language school but decided the chaotic crowds made a clean shot almost impossible yet here you've succeeded with not just one but 2 vehicles! Maybe another time. I live quite close to Istanbul. The red color contrasts superbly against the blue sky. Tfs!
