Three Towers and Some More, a photo from Istanbul, Marmara

Photographer's Note

Taken from the same point on the Byzantine Walls, this time we are looking towards east. Here you can see three seperate parts of the city: the one at the front is the Fener District, located inside the old town in the historic peninsula, the one on the left is Pera District (other side of Golden Horn) and the one at the top is the Asian side, seperated from Pera and Old Town by Bosphorus.

The towers your see here are:

1- The red one at the front: Fener Greek High School. Originally dating back to 1454, this Greek School was a part of the Orthodox Patriarchy of Constantinople, and had only Greek students. The red brick structure was built in 1882. Today it has been teaching continuously since 559 years.

2- The one on the left: Galata Tower. Originally built in 528 by the Byzantines, it was destroyed during the 4th Crusade (Latin Invasion) of 1202-1204. The structure standing today was built in 1348 during the Genoese expansion in Constantinople, and it was the tallest in town with its 66,9 meters height.

3- The one afar: Varyap Meridian. Residential building in the Asian side, completed in 2012. 2nd tallest in Turkey and 13th tallest in Europe with its 244 meters height.

Istanbul has seen many towers in its long history, while our money based modern times make everything larger and uglier. What do you think?

edit note: After Mesut Ilgim's notice, i need to add that, there is a huge compressed perspective here, due to the focal length used. The distance between first two towers is more than 3 kilometers, while the tower in Asian side is almost 10 kilometers away :)

The effect of surprise of course does play any longer, but again it's a well worth image in itself

Bu seri çok iyi gidiyor. Eline gözüne sağlık. Ama bilgi notlarına bunun "stitch" oldupunu ekle, yoksa biri İstanbul'a gelip Galata Kulesinin yanıbaşında Fener Rum okulunu ararsa fena şişer !
Bu arada sana bir bilgi notu.
Orta bölümde gözüken Galata kulesi ile hemen sağındaki eski İngiliz Hastanesi kulesinin (şimdilerde Beyoğlu Belediye hastanesi ve de benim gittiğim Avusturya Lisesinin yanıbaşında) hikayesi :
Neyzen Tevfik birgün kıyak kafa ile Eminönünden Galata köprüsüne doğru yürümeye başlar bir de bakarki Galata kulesinin yanıbaşında bir kule daha. Önce gözlerini oğuşturur hayal görmediğini anlar ve cebinden defterini çıkartıp yazar : "Sanmaki Galata kulesi ikidir, sağda görüneni soldakinin si..dir" !

Hello Deniz. Again a great photo. The visual effect of the 300mm lens is really fascinating. Yes, you needed in everyday life best a superzoom for all occasions. But then the camera would be too heavy and unwieldy. Anyway, your photo is perfektt and technich excellent.

We continue to enjoy Istanbul through your lens and in this pick and choosy light. I call it so because it has selectively alighted a few and has kept the rest in the dark. Hello Deniz,
You (or Mesut) made a good point here about compressed perspective, because this photo makes Istanbul look like a giant, relatively flat stone desert. The Bosphorus is hardly visible and the Golden horn not at all. In spite of that the view isn't less fascinating. I am impressed that you managed to squeeze all these areas into one shot. I agree that the Galata tower has more character and is more easily recognizable than the tower on the Asian side, but I think that future generations may judge today's architecture with different eyes (provided that today's buildings are good enough to last for hundreds of years).

here I know all the towers. Near red tower and Galata I was with you and I saw even Varyap Meridian from the bus going to Bursa :). It is really amazing how the perspective is squeezed here. Also strange that the walls are not so high and what a stunning views are from there. But it is the light that makes these photos so remarkable. We have had the views in three directions, I am looking forward to seeing the view of the south.

another fine example of your stunning use of light, color and symmetry, deniz ~
i especially like the layers of light in this shot. the sun highlights the rich, vibrant colors of the historic buildings, while at the same time rendering the new highrises almost colorless. certainly personality-less. i think the sun knows what it is doing.
i'm with you, i much prefer the old towers to the crass new ones, which could be anywhere in the world. and, in fact, are everywhere in the world.

Your recent posts have taught me so much about this amazing city, the views offer so much detail, and your complimentary notes explain so well what we are viewing. The photos y post give me a completely new impression of Istanbul, from it's old city to its modern soaring towers. Once again, the light has allowed creation of such appealing images. A fine idea of framing & compo here with the cluster of apartment buildings almost hugging each other filling the frame stretching all the way and it seems that every inch is occupied not wasted. But this certainly conveys it's own uniqueness & charm well preserved while the towering structures stand above the rest. The play of side light and rich tones are sublime with excellent depth and perspective. A very beautiful attractive composition!

Hi Deniz,

Another really beautiful photo with excellent POV of this very crowded ancient city. We can see the changes in the city scape, the old and historical and the new and modern high rises. The light is very unique here and make this image very special and exciting to look at. the warm color and clarity in the foreground version the cool blue hazy background. Creating really nice contrast. Excellent quality image.

The 'magic' light yet again...
The FG and the BG shows two Istanbuls indeed...a classier FG and a less classier modern BG. The tower of the Fener Greek High School looksquite interesting with a slight admixture of styles I think. Fine work yet again!

So how's New Year treating you? When do you come to India?
