St. Mary Draperis

Walking down Istiklal Avenue we went past this church which I must have passed by about a hundred times when I lived in Istanbul. This time, I stopped to take photos. I found out that it is the Church of St. Mary Draperis. This is what I found out about it in Wikipedia:

Saint Mary Draperis is a Roman Catholic Church in Istanbul, important for historical reasons. Established in 1584, the church is one of the most ancient Roman Catholic parishes of Istanbul.

In 1453, a few months before the Ottoman Conquest of Constantinople, Observant Franciscan Friars completed the construction of the church of Saint Anthony of the Cypresses in Sirkeci (at that time center of the venetian Merchants in Constantinople), on the southern bank of the Golden Horn, but soon after the Conquest they were forced to abandon it. After several peregrinations, in 1584 they moved to Galata, in the neighborhood of Mumhane (English: Wax Han), where a Levantine woman, Clara Maria Draperis, endowed them a house with a tiny chapel. The altar of the chapel was adorned with a wooden icon portraying the Virgin Mary. The chapel burned completely in 1660, and the icon was rescued by a member of the Draperis family. In case of total destruction because of fire, Ottoman law imposed the restitution of the land to the State. Because of that, in order to rebuild the church the friars should have first asked for a Sultan's Firman allowing the reconstruction, but in absence of that the just rebuilt church was demolished in 1663 by the Ottoman government. The friars then abandoned the neighborhood and settled uphill in Pera, in a place named Dörtyol (four roads). They built there in 1678 a new church, which burned in 1697, was rebuilt and destroyed again by the strong earthquake of 1727. Erected once again, the edifice burned for the third time in 1767 and was finally rebuilt for the fifth time in 1769. After each catastrophe the icon of the Virgin could always be rescued, and embellishes still today the main altar. Together with St. Anthony of Padua, also on Istiklal Caddesi, and SS. Peter and Paul in Galata, the church was one of the three Roman Catholic Parishes in the Levantine quarter of Istanbul. During the 19th century St. Mary became one of the most prestigious Catholic churches in the city. In 1803 its parish had a flock of 470 Levantines, plus several Arab Catholics from Aleppo and Armenian Catholics.

The church is still officiated by reformed Franciscan friars who offer daily masses in Italian and mass in Spanish every Sunday.

The blurriness of the in the lower banisters / door area must have been due to wet filter on the lens. By this time, I had given up on drying the camera.

İstiklal Caddesi boyunca yürürken ben İstanbul'da yaşadığım zamanlar yaklaşık yüz kere geçmiş olduğum bu kilisenin yanından geçtik. Bu sefer, fotoğraf çekmek için durdum. Bunun Aziz Mary Draperis Kilisesi olduğunu öğrendim. İşte Wikipedia’dan bu konuda öğrendiklerim:

Aziz Mary Draperis İstanbul'da tarihsel nedenlerle önemli bir Roma Katolik Kilisesidir. 1584 yılında kurulan kilise İstanbul'unen eski Roma Katolik cemaatlarından biridir.

1453 yılında, Konstantinopolis’in Osmanlılarca fethinden birkaç ay önce, İtaatkâr Fransiskan Keşişleri Haliç’in güney kıyısında Sirkeci’de, (Konstantinopolis’deki Venedik tüccarlarının o zamanki merkezi) Selvilerin Azizi Anthony kilisesinin inşaatını tamamlandı, ama fethinden kısa sonra bunu terk etmek zorunda kaldılar. Birkaç taşınmadan sonra, 1584 yılında Galata'ya, Mumhane (İngilizce Wax Han) Mahallesi'ne, onlara Levanten bir kadın Clara Maria Draperis’in küçük bir şapel ile donatılmış bir ev bağışladığı yere taşındılar. Şapelin sunağı Aziz Meryem’i tasvir eden ahşap bir simge ile süslenmişti. Şapel 1660 yılında tamamen yandı ve ikon Draperis ailesinin bir üyesi tarafından kurtarıldı. Yangın nedeniyle toplam imha durumunda, Osmanlı hukuku arazinin devlete iadesini empoze ederdi. Bu nedenle, kiliseyi yeniden inşa etmek amacıyla rahiplerin önce Sultan'ın fermanını istemeliydiler, ama bunun yokluğunda yeni yapılmış kilise, Osmanlı hükümeti tarafından 1663 yılında yıkıldı. Rahipler daha sonra mahalleyi terkettiler ve yokuş yukarı, Pera'da Dörtyol adlı bir yerde yerleştiler. Orada 1697 yılında yanan yeni bir kiliseyi 1678 yılında inşa ettiler, yeniden inşa edildi ve 1727’de güçlü bir depremde tahrip edildi. Tekrar dikilen yapı 1767 yılında üçüncü kez yandı ve nihayet 1769 yılında beşinci kez yeniden inşa edildi. Her felaketten sonra Meryem simgesi hep kurtarıldı, ve bugün hala ana sunağı süslemektedir. Bu kilise, İstiklal Caddesi üzerinde Aziz Padua Anthony ve Galata’da Azizler Peter ve Paul ile birlikte, İstanbul'da Levanten bölümünde üç Roma Katolik cemaatlerinden biriydi. 19. yüzyılda Aziz Meryem kentin en prestijli Katolik kiliselerinden biri oldu. 1803 yılında cemaatinde, Halep ve Ermeni Katoliklerden 470 Levanten, artı birkaç Arap Katoliği vardı.

Kilisede halen reforme Fransiskan rahipleri tarafından yönetilen her Pazar İspanyolca aşai rabbani ayini, günlük İtalyanca ayinler sunulur.

Alt korkuluk / kapı alanındaki bulanıklık mercek üzerindeki ıslak filtre nedeniyle olmalı. Artık ben fotoğraf makinesini kurutmaktan vazgeçmiştim.
