Photographer's Note

The last (for now at least) in my little series about colorful Shibam. This view was not just surprising but - to me - actually startling.

Imagine you're walking along a narrow, winding alley, surrounded by high-rise family houses with mud-plastered walls, and no pavement - it's the same ochre-colored stuff the walls are made from. At the end of the alley it's getting lighter: you can see you're walking towards a little square. Then you round a corner, and see this. The color on the lower wall was very, very bright, a startling contrast to all the ochre surrounding it.

Also compare this to the Shibam doors image. Again we see here a pair of doors, one of which is fancier than the other (see the door frame, and the stoop): no doubt the fancier door leads to the living quarters while the door to the right of it leads to the livestock space on the ground floor.
