Photographer's Note

Exterior art murals painted on the facades of buildings are becoming very popular in North America and parts of Europe. In many cases the murals are commissioned by town and city councils as part of an effort to revitalize older urban areas. In Canada, the town in the west which has gained fame for its numerous exterior building murals in recent years is Chemainus on Vancouver Island.

I came across this mural in Sussex on my recent trip to eastern Canada, and as luck would have it the artist himself, Ken White, was just putting the finishing touches on his design on the side of this store, one of several commissioned by the town council. Ken White lives in Wiltshire, England, and travels around the world painting murals on commission in such diverse locales as playground and factory walls, recording studios, public houses and aeroplanes. Interior murals of his include works in gymnasiums and leisure complexes, shopping arcades, and museums. His style is tailored to suit the client and location, ranging from trompe l'oeil to impressionism or abstract.
