Photographer's Note

"That goddamned Cinerama... do you know a waist shot is as close as you could get with that thing?"
-- Henry Hathaway, director, "How the West Was Won" (1962)

Well, a waist shot I got... with a Nikon...;-)

The buggy drivers of Ottawa are delightful characters. This one, Peter, is one: he has 5 children, some already at university, from 5 different women, and has lived a remarkably colourful life the extent of which unfortunately I cannot share here. As we were talking close to the market that afternoon, with him cheerfuly waiting for passengers on his buggy, I tried to take some shots of him without being intrusive or him being self-conscious (though I guess that, should he have noticed, he would unlikely to be).

Seeing this shot on my screen at home, I was reminded of vintage Westerns; with his broad-rimmed hat and his hands in his pockets, Peter, like John Wayne, looked towering above the Ottawa desert...
