Photographer's Note

While we were in Merida, Carlos, a local friend, took us on a tour of some of the less-trevelled sites of the city. Amongst other places, we visited a former hacienda, now converted into an educational centre where classes and workshops are held.

In the courtyart outside, for the hundredth time since arriving in the city, the magical light of Merida caught my attention. These plastic banners flew everywhere around a small shrine devoted to the Virgin Mary. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that the display was related to Christmas (it was December 29th, but the Christmas season is pretty extended in Mexico and was by no means over).

If there were no other reason to go back to Merida -- and believe me there are lots of them, and I will go back -- then the sunlight alone would be reason enough.
