Photographer's Note

In Europe the Berlin Wall is down and the Iron Curtain has disappeared, but on the border between the USA and Mexico another wall is being expanded by the US authorities.
The border between the USA and Mexico is some 2,000 miles (3 219 km) long. On the urban areas, the US has built a separating so-called secure fence. It is made of different types of stuff and has different levels of security, depending on location. Plans are on the go to spread out the fence all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico (on May, 2006 the US Senate approved a expansion that could include 370 miles of triple layered-fencing and a vehicle fence).
On the very shore and into the sea of Imperial Beach (US side) and Playas de Tijuana (Mexico side), the fence is made of metallic pillars, side by side, inserted in the sand and ocean floor. See it in Fixing the Broken Border and in El Otro Lado.
Above the sandy beach, the barrier becomes a metallic wall; see it behind the U.S. Border Patrol vehicle in the workshop photo.
On a section, between the arena in Playas de Tijuana (Mexico) and the Border Field State Park (USA), the metallic fence is softened, becoming this metallic net that allows some view through it. However, this iron curtain is rather similar to the infamous Iron Curtain that divided Europe during the Cold War.
The US authorities say the fence has been a success against illegal immigrants and drug smugglers. Anyway I guess that the deterrent effect of this wall is more psychological than physical. The barrier isn't that difficult to overcome, but it shows who has the power to build it. Even with the fence, there is always the control of the U.S. Border Patrol (see a vehicle here and other in the workshop). The electronic control of the border is also accomplished, as you see on the other workshop.
On the highway border crossing, the strict US control causes very long lines.
