Summer of '69, a photo from Bayern, Ouest

Photographer's Note

Going home from a long visit to Italy in the summer of 1969 I travelled with a friend in his car through Yugoslavia and Hungary among other countries. As we had reached West Germany and were travelling north from Munich, we were very keen to see the ancient city of Bamberg in the northern part of Bavaria. We had been studying art history during the past year and were anxious to see the famous 11th–13th century Romanesque cathedral, featuring a number of marvellous sculptures.

I don't remember anything about this picture which shows the river Regnitz, but I guess it must be fairly close to the centre of the city.

Concerning the title of the photo, Summer of '69 was a song recorded by Bryan Adams in 1984. In the West German singles chart it peaked at #82, according to Wikipedia. It was more successful in other countries.

This photo was scanned from an Agfacolor CT18 slide.

nice image from the Kleine Venedig of Bamberg. I have been there several times when I was living in Bayreuth.
it's a very pleasant city....and I hope you tried the local beer "schenkerla"

Lovely postcard photo. You camera seem to have had a surprisingly wide lens and not bad quality at all, very nice tonal range.

Wonderful houses too. I doubt this view will look any different now. Presumably someone can fish from the balcony!

Hello dear Gert,
Another nice "oldie" from Germany.
With good pov and good layout.
Agfacolor was allways typical with it's warm colors, like here. Whereas Kodachrome was good in red's and Ectachrome in blue und green !

Another country on your impressive list. I wonder if there is another TE member with more countries represented... A very fine photo with the long row of old buildings along the river. I wouldn´t be surprised if this view is exactly the same today. An excellent capture. Some people went to the moon this summer, but you went to Bamberg instead, a wise choice.

This picture looks like newly taken, excellent pp works for sure. I like this general scene and the mellowed golden light, shades and soft shadows, resulting in very awesome peaceful riverscene. Good compostion with main focal rightly positioned on both flanks with some good additional foreground subjects, the human element in the lower fg is perfect to keep the eye into perspective. Sharpness and details are superb so as the contrast with excellent depth. Another excellent capture from yr archive.

Hi Gert, So you left the iron curtain and went to west Germany. Excellent quality of the more than forty years old photo. Beautiful houses on the river and we see even some swans. I do not remember this place, maybe I have it on my photos. I will look later. The most famous in Bamberg is the City Hall on water.

This is a fantastic picture of the famous Bamberg, I like this general scene shadows and soft light and strong contrast shadows, so very awesome peaceful river scene. Hello Gert,

You're capturing well this the landscape of riverside by a good angle, so it's interesting and impressive to see a row of private houses with red roof along the river. It's impressive that some swan are swimming the the river. Here seems to peaceful place. And, the light projected to the river draws out a good effect.

Wow! Summer of '69 I was still in the U.S. Navy stationed in Long Beach, California, and it was a wonderful year. Nice capture of this canal and the beautiful architectures. Good pov and dof with nice details. Great lighting. Well done, tfs.

I am not too sure if Bamberg has indeed changed a lot! As always the scan quality is excellent! The diagonal composition creates depth. Its good to see the typically designed houses (especially the roofs) along the river. Only the car is an indication that this is a picture of 43 years ago.

I had the pleasure to visit this wonderful town as well.
Without a camera.
This picture was taken before I was even born and it feels indeed quite old. The quality is great. None of my photos taken even 10 years ago are that good. I like the presence of plenty little things like old cars etc which add this old time feeling.

I remember the song and I remember 1969 as well :)
I saw a very long list of countries where you photographed, so I thought I will pick a country with te least number of photographs. I was surprised that it is Germany. What does it tell us? About uou taking only 1 shot? Or about me being surprised?

A superior scan-job done here, on a well presrrved slide through time's, Gert.
The view is awesome and surely had not change much - except to the VW-Transporter we see on far right side, which is a good indication to the "age" of this picture.
Depth, clarity and colors, river action by the lone boat-man and the swans on the other side - all wonderfully rendered.
