Photographer's Note
Maybe melancholy is too melodramatic. Perhaps I just mean elegaic. But seaside towns in Winter always seem to have a forlorn air about them. Teignmouth is where my parents went when they retired, and both died there, so perhaps my mood was influenced by that sadness. The day was nearing its end, the tide was out, the sea was calm and sluggish. So I took this photograph.

Hi Will
yes, after reading your note, its pretty clear that this was an emotional post. We don't see these emotional posts very often here on TE.
and again, after reading the note and what happened to your parents, now when I look at the scene again it's very upfront and personal, makes a strong impact on the viewer.
well done
cheers

Hello will, For sure, the memories of the parents for sure influenced the mood of sadness. with no people around, and with black and white treatment it look melancholic. But with some sun it would be different , even in winter. I visited a few seaside town in England in December and they were quite cheerful.
Splendid composition with the silver reflections, nice many vertical and diagonal lines.
Warm regards Malgo

Hi Will
The B&W mood gives an old fashion feeling and is suitable to describe the different lines, the vertical ones against the diagonal ones. The back light illuminates the small waves on the deserted beach, I feel quiet.
Cheers

Bonjour Will,
J'aime vraiment la construction de cette image ainsi que la volonté de vouloir lui faire dire quelque chose. Une belle ligne de fuite ainsi qu'une lumière presque filtrée. Très beau noir et blanc.
Amicalement

Hello will,
I sometimes enjoy seaside towns more in the winter as the light can be lovely on the right day. This is a picture that I would like to have taken with its silvery sheen and strong black shapes. Perfect!
Kind Regards, Ann

Hello Will,
Even with no personal connections to this place I can feel the melancholy atmosphere, but above all I see a graphically very attractive photo with fine diagonals as well as horizontal and vertical lines. The soft reflections and many tones of grey have created a smooth surface that I like.
Kind regards,
Gert

Will,
may I assume that you did a homage to your late parents, unconciously?
I could understand that well.

Dear Will,
Without the description I only saw a well edited picture with excellent BW conversion. After reading the description it tells a story. Thanks for sharing!
Best Regards,
Gy.

Hello Will
With the last days of summer fading fast, what an idea to already post your winter melancholy shot. Just as we're bracing ourselves for another season of grey and dark...
The only possible excuse is beauty.
So, there you go...you're forgiven!
And this great shot is made even more powerful by the personal touch in your note. Thanks for posting.
Greetings from Antwerp.

Hello Will,
the water has a very suggestive power in your picture and I like very much the space you gave it, gathering its mesmerizing effects -like its movement, plasticity, silky texture, silvery, metallic surface- in an elegant and poetic way. The vertical structures on the beach make fine patterns but look very fragile. A timeless image, open to the viewer's personal reflections even though so tightly connected to your feelings and memories. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
Ourania

Hello Will
Wonderful and moody shot that works wonders in black and white. The melancholy you describe in your note is really palpable here, maybe inspired by your personal history with the place. But then, as you say, seaside towns in winter have that distinct forlorn feel about them and I quite like that too.
have a great weekend

Hi Will!
This is a great b&w! I love the silver reflections on the water and the silhouettes of the poles, you framed it perfectly! It may transmit melancholy, also because of the weather - I think it's a great photo!

Wonderfull shot form a piece of see in black & white...
It's very difficult to catch te see in B&W and here the light is amazing and the picture is beautifull.
The composition is perfect too, lines, lights and shadows, wawe... It's a quite and dynamic (almost musical) composition...

Gidday Will
I see someone's been playing with the thesaurus ;) Love that word, "elegiac", but a very beautiful image, nicely suited for this moody image. The silver light is quite attractive and the perspective has been beautifully accentuated by the poles in the water.
A beautiful tribute to your parents.
Great job, thanks for sharing
Lisa
