Photographer's Note

This photo was taken with my new tele lens, a lens i've been wanting to buy now for over a year...sigh... :)

As i was out and about in the downtown Vancouver Financial District taking photo's of buildings (what a surprise) there were a group of young photographers out with a teacher!

Its funny because this area is fairly large, and it seemed as if we were following each other around the entire city! I met up with the group of students again here, this was about the 3rd time during the evening. The teacher is off the frame to the left with more students, and i couldn't help but capture these 3 here with their tripods all set up.

What you're looking at is the 2010 Winter Olympic Couldron that was lit. It no longer produces flames, but its forever an iconic symbol in our city now.

I've also added a photo in the WS, which has a stronger HDR effect.

Hi Craig,

Good spot, the three photographs are very well placed in the frame. I like the colour tones in this one, the orange of the office lights is a great contrast. Seems like the evening light has been a great benefit in this instance, I imagine reducing the glare from the glass and providing a more even exposure. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Craig,
The colours are what struck me in the thumbnail and the large picture shows a lovely range of tones. The yellow lights in the building give an inviting glow and the olympic structure makes an impressive graphic FG. I can see why it attracted photographers. I am wondering whether their photos were as good as yours!

Hello Craig,
Maybe they are beginners and have just learned that they should go close enough. Next time they will learn, as you already did, that fine compositions can also be achieved by going back a few steps to include people, the nearest details and a fine background. There are some great early evening reflections in the windows and I like that green vertical line, whatever it means.

Hello Craig,

I'm glad that you explained the structure. It is iconic and what a wonderful reminder of the Winter Olympics. It is with great excitement that we look forward to the Summer Olympics. Tickets have been very scarce but my husband and I have managed to secure just two! Can't wait!!

The overall blues give quite a chilly effect, quite symbolic for the icon of the Winter Games. I like how you have positioned the students off-centre, matching the composition of the tepee shaped icon and, three is a good compositional number. The vertical tube is strongly positioned, making a good, natural link towards the stepped-effect sky scrapers. A sharply exposed shot of which you must have been satisfied.

HI Craig

SO you've got your new toy and good for you going out and making use of it. That's one thing we can never be criticised for: buying something and never using it. But to your photo. Noting the "y" in the corner and comparing it to the more harsh HDR in the WS, I must congratulate you on the subtlety in the main photo. Love the blue tones and of course the marvellous graphism of the sculpture against the skyscraper. I'm asking a silly question when I say: do you have a close-up of the sculpture? I'd bet money on the fact that you do. Anyway, great tones, and light. The bluish caste (which I think you;d get anyway without the HDR) has been accentuated nicely by the post-processing. Nice work.

I think that the structure and the colours of the Winter Olympic Couldron fits very well with the high buildings behind it.
The overall blue colours make this part of downtown Vancouver look very special.
The inclusion of the photographers (on both pictures) was a good idea.

First of all, thank you for your "y", especially for me! But I think I could have worked that one out this time - definitely in the workshop picture anyway!

Secondly, congratulations on your new lens. I was just having a look at my favourite review site for lenses and the one you got is apparently a real cracker - see here.

Still on the subject of equipment, I couldn't help being a bit nosey and looking at your discussion with Lisa - what filters did you get? Were they Lee or Hi-Tech or Cokin or what? And that did you get - ND Grads?

Anyway, to your photograph. Quite interesting that this, your first picture here with your new toy, was only taken at 80mm - right near the short end of that lens. The composition is lovely and I think the long vertical green line up the left side is a very strong compositional element. The other strong compositional element - probably seen better in your workshop picture - is how the shape of this architectural feature is mirrored in the tripods of the photographers, almost as though those people are imitating the sculpture!

Another case in which your subtle use of HDR has produced a very fine effect. Lovely colours, perfect exposure, subtle HDR and stunning sharpness.

Now to your workshop picture. In many ways, I think I might actually prefer it, funnily enough. The HDR is not quite so subtle as we are used to seeing with you (it is indeed more "painterly") but I think I prefer the composition as the photographers and their tripods are just seen a little more clearly.

Impeccable sharpness, and I particularly like the warm cold color contrast between the amber illumination and the blue tones. The symmetry between the giant tripod shaped sculpture & the minuscule tripods in front of it are also noteworthy. I am half expecting to see a giant camera affixed! Tfs!

I like the dynamic atmosphere created by the young photographers, while they try to take some photo of this Olympic icon, in a very pleasant and vital scene.
Your first photos with your new lens have a high quality of image and a good luminosity, in spite of the weak light of the late afternoon.
The lighting of the building in background, and the blue tonalities of the elements, increase the beauty of this ensemble.

Very nice capture from Vancouver !
Not only the layout and compo, but also the (not dominant) elemets, like the 3 members of the photography class adds a different taste to the capture.
Hopefully they will learn one day that the tripod is not allways necessary :-)) Specially in daylight.
My opinion is that sometime it can help you, but my method since more than 50 years is quite cheap and simple. I allways have a rope of 1.5-2 m in my pocket.
Whenever necessary, I bind it around the camera and let the other end fall down. Then I press the loose end with my foot and pull the camera !
Try it, it workd :-))

Haha, happy with the new toy, big boy. And what chances has poor Emka, with her small camera with simple lens, and too lazy to use a tripod:) I can't wait till I will see you in action . I hope I will learn a lot. Interesting shot in blue, in contrast, this green line is real eyecatcher. Nice scene. I wonder if the people learn much during such courses. They are very expensive.

So this is yet another HDR, & yet unless you mentioned, couldn't have known! Is this a multiple shot or single shot HDR? I believe its the former, as the latter is not exactly a HDR...but just asking!

I saw both your posts & despite the HDR being more evident in the WS post, I seem to like it. I guess its the wider view & how the Couldron 'sits' in the frame against the backdrop of the buildings...just seems better IMHO

Very interesting urban shot(s) & the learning photographers seem to learn taking closeup shots of the Couldron.

Well Craig, you were not the only one out there - but must be some magic draw them to the exact location - I can tell why: Mingling the modern statue with the building, in many blue diff. tones creats a wonderful scene. i can also see people in the offices there... good sharp image.
