The Bubble About to Burst, a photo from District of Columbia, Sud

Photographer's Note

This is not a creation in Photoshop! Twenty-five years ago on a clear winter night I shot an entire roll of images of the moon, using a 1600 mm-focal length Questar telescope, coupled to a Nikon-F camera. (This magnification corresponds to a 2400 mm lens on a digital camera.) I kept careful notes on where the moon was located in each frame, and whether the camera was configured vertically or horizontally. Then I put the film in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. Months later I retrieved the film, and on a trip to Washington, DC, I used the film again, being mindful of where the moon was located. (The background for the moon was, of course, completely black, unexposed, after the original shots of the moon.) In shooting the Washington Monument and the rest of the skyline of Washington, DC, I used a 135-mm lens. It behooves me to admit I also had a number catastrophic "collisions" of moon and earth. The moon did get punctured, the Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami was leveled, etc.

The Washington Monument is a 550 foot (167 meter) high obelisk erected in the 1860s to honor the First President of the United States, George Washington (1732-1799). Approximately one-fourth of the way from the bottom of the monument, there is a subtle change in color. During the Civil War years (1861-1865) work on the monument was interrupted, and later resumed. During the second phase of the building, a variation of the original stone had been used, exhibiting a slightly different hue.

PS It has been three years since I posted this photo. I was a neophyte with post-processing. There is a great deal of noise that could have been remove. I am grateful to Linda Richters (richtersl) who has done ws versions to show how much the photo could have been corrected.

POSTSCRIPT. In celebrating the 'Year of Astronomy,' inspired by the 400th Anniversary of the invention of the telescope, I employed a 7" Questar to photograph the moon. The resolution one can achieve is quite remarkable.

You had an interesting idea and ended up with a very nice result.
I feel a bit uneasy though looking at the photo and that must be due to the difference in which the sun light hits the moon, i.e. orthogonal to the picture plane, relative to the obelisk and other stuff on the ground which are being illuminated sideways. However, at the same time this goes along pretty well with your title story: that's not the moon but some strange see-through shadowless giant bubble floating randomly in the air. You're right it had a good chance of falling onto that pointy object underneath and vanishing forever and probly that's what happened. You captured a decisive moment.

Batalay, I love this shot. At first I thought you had to have one heck of a telephoto, but the true story is more impressive. Did you have an idea of what kind of shot you would match the moon with when you put it in the freezer? I am sure you must have made several exposures... did any others work out in interesting ways? And how did you get the second exposure to line up with the first ie. the edges of the frame to line up? I can answer this for motion picture film, but not for stills!

However it was done, it is fantastic. Certainly among the most creative I have seen on the site, where the art is more than just pointing a lens at something interesting, at the right time.

Bulent, this is awesome!! You already received so many good feedbacks on this one that one more will seem unsignificant...I know...but still, this is awesome. I meam, the technique you used to do that. Is it common practice for people shooting on films? People had to be pretty ingenious to do what we can do on photoshop in just a couple of clicks now...
The result is a pretty powerful image with the obelisk going to bore the balloon:D REally really beautiful, I keep staring at it...

Thanks for your comment on my Epcot photo. It's funny you should comment today, as I am in Virginia (Centreville) for the weekend visiting my boyfriend. I visit often (the hour-and-a-half flight is so quick and painless), and after my first visit a couple years ago I had fallen in love with the NoVA/DC area! This weekend we will hopefully go to DC, because I still have never seen the cherry blossoms, and I'm hoping there will be some left in bloom, since the Festival ends Sunday!

I wanted to comment a picture in your gallery for several reasons and the first one is mainly due to your scientist carrier which seems impressive as i checked your bio. I used too to practised a lot of theorical mathematics and physics in ingeneering studies and for sure i would have loved to have such a teacher like you ! Must be very pleasant to hear you comparing so far concepts to leonardo da vinci and perhaps now to pictures ;) i also appreciate the man you seem to be, very gentle and polite ... Your presence here on TE is a must.
I pick this one cause photogrpahicaly saying this is a marvelous picture, taken at 1600 mm i will have never have in my hands such a zoom !! The result is huge and working in informatics now i can see a "0" and a "1" which is the basics in informatics ;)
So you are true, in each picture we can relate to mathematics or physical concepts

Stunning double exposure Bulent that makes for an outstanding result. I remember this tech of the 'old days' - not always so easy to do with a result as here. Interesting note of the colour differences on the monument. Presented in i good quality as from being from 82 indicating also a good job by the scanner.

Interesting how you achieved this! It must have taken a lot time measuring and making sure everything was perfect. I'm very attached to photoshop, but probably because I could never achieve anything like this! I'd be scared of wasting the film and it all turning out wrong. You did this incredibly well. On a technical point, there is nothing i can add, but it is so nice that i have to give it some more:-).
But then, what i prefer is the connection between subject, technic and comment, Moon come and go every day. If you don't care it is just a earth sattelit, but if you look closer you can discover incredibles views of it. Sometimes, people have to freeze their mind to forget daily matters and discover how beautifull is the world.That can take a lot of time (to many months).

Sometimes I have crazy ideas, like thinking about how it would be if we( The earth ) had such a close satellite or more than one, or how it be to live in Titan and have Saturn which covers half of the sky with its giant riangs. Well done Bulent. I have tried this but without much success although I have sandwiched two slides together for a similar effect. I think picking the Washington Monument was an excellent choice.

Unlike everybody else, this is not my favourite shot.

It is a great image for sure. The technical prowesses in producing this picture are REALLY impressive.

Nevertheless, I personally think this is more impressive because it was not done with Photoshop, not because it is a great picture.

This image is somewhat misleading because it depicts a technical prowess but it remains a composition, not a picture.

I think Trek Lens is a site better suited for a composition.

But again, and I mean every word I say: this is GREAT work! Very impressive.

i stumbled upon this beauty while visiting your page. when i saw the title in the thumbnail, i thought you meant it in a symbolic way - as in the bursts of the asset value bubble that is happening now in the markets. oh well, practical me. i see the date of the post is a couple years ago. and the date of shooting is in 1982... :)

beautiful composition and i truly admire your patience in this process. pre-shooting the roll, keeping in, juxtaposing later. i learned quite a bit from your note.

This is undoubtedly one of the very finest and one of the most creative photographs that has ever been posted on the Trek Earth forum. This is also a fantastic example of your superb technique of doing a double exposure with film. A word of advice; NEVER sell your old Questar telescope. The optics of this scope are unsurpassed not to mention its amazing portability and versatility. A world class photograph for sure!

A "home made" photoshop work before the software era !Incredible, and the result is perfect.
"Discussing among physicists", I noted, looking at your picture, how the impression one has of the moon's surface when looking at it by naked eye is so different from the actual image. The sort of human face which one "sees" by naked eye does not exist if one looks at a photograph of the moon, and it is probably an interpretation made by our brain out of the actual position of the moon seas.
I was also reading that the explication of why the moon appears bigger when close to the horizon is very controversial and not clear at all.
Someone says it is because we see the moon next to terrestrial objects, and our brain sets the scale differently. But this does not occur if the moon rises below a mountain, already high in the sky.
My own personal explanation is that the full moon at the horizon is fainter, and there is a different contrast with the black sky. This might be interpreted differently by our brain, compared to a very bright moon over a dark sky.
But I have to admit that I did not find this explanation anywhere else.
If I am right a lunar eclipse should make the moon appear bigger. I do not remember if it does !

Hi Bulent,
what a great photo of the moon. I dont have much knowledge of photography and how camers work, I noticed jsec really like this photo I know this him very well and hes a great photographer but very hard to please, he a perfectionist and like to have a moan about photo and how they should be, so for jeff to say this is one of the best photo on TE, what a bonus. when i see jeff next he can explain how this shot was done.

Hello Professor,

I have been looking at this photo since sometime ago. It is still one of the most incredible photograph of the moon I have ever seen. The moon appears so unreal, and so fragile. It looks as though the monument is about to pop open the moon. At the time of Nikon F, this must have been a very difficult object to document in the way you had done it. No matter how many times I look at the image, no matter how long I observe the image, The initial impression of this image never fade. More than twenty years later the image bring us the same surprise and astonishment. It is an image which will never fade.

I just cannot believe it!
I have a photo which I uploaded from Cork City, having a huge moon much smaller than this one here but I created it in the photoshop HERE.
In any case the effect is stunning and you have well chosen the obelisk as an object well contrasting with the oval shape of the moon.

What an incredible photo of the enlarged moon - I have so much to learn about photography my husband told me that it is enlarged by using a telescopic lens... what would I know being an amateur - I thought we were on another planet... ha! ha!

I have no idea at how and why I just now stumbled upon this amazing shot but being already here, I can't restrain myself to comment.
Poor moon looks like it is going to be pierced by the Washington monument like a soap bubble.
The double exposure technique you used for this is absolutely perfect. I still remember the time when we had to think about every shot we took very carefully. Not being able to see the result on a screen but to have to wait until a roll of film was complete and than send it in for development, only to eagerly await the results back ...., sometimes being disappointed when an entire roll of 24 or 36 exposures where waisted to some silly mistakes in camera settings. Not to speak of the costs of a roll of film then!
Your meticulous noting of the position of the moon in every frame has paid of well in this fine example indeed, the result is mesmerizing.
