Photographer's Note

The centuries-long effects of wind erosion can be clearly seen in this photo of Gove County's Monument Rocks in west-central Kansas, USA. These rock formations have long served as a navigational landmark for nomadic plains Indians, and later for European explorers and settlers en route to the Rocky Mountains and sites further west. Sitting in the middle of a vast prairie, they can be seen for miles.

Though situated on privately owned land, access is permitted, although rains can render the dirt roads impassable. Time your photo visit for early morning or late afternoon. Mid-day photo efforts will be disappointing - flat and colorless.
