Photographer's Note
42nd and about Madison I believe.
This was an interesting scene for the camera to capture. The top of the picture was broad, bright golden daylight while the street level had already embraced the darkness of night. My D30, mighty as it is, couldn't hope to capture all this dynamic range in one single exposure. I braced myself against a lamp post and left the shutter open long enough to get some natural blur on the man walking. I wanted to convey the two conflicting times of day in one photograph, but there's no way I could keep the shutter open that long to create those kind of light streams without blowing out all the natural light portions of the photograph. A little photoshop magic was required at this point. Check my workshopped version to see the steps involved in creating this final version.

Hi Chris. The b/w conversion is excellent. Although, I am not sure about this man here, it looks like some noise on one side of his face. nice job with the lights from the cars, it would have looked really good with this man fully frozen.

this is astunning shot, well worthy of a place in a publication. The DOF and movement along with B&W treatment all gells perfectly. Well done.

Hi Chris -
This is an excellent photo.... i like the busy feeling, all the motion and excitedness. I generally feel B&W photos have a calming sense about them, and this one still does even though the subject is black friday, thanks for sharing, cheers,

almost dyslexic as a shot, and fitting so well the city it's taken in, but also the day, with traffic and shopping madness (goldrush, says the store) the order of the day. Somehow, this shot makes us feel that NY is a tough city not to feel anonymous, at that street level. Great contribution, and quite original in its rendition, Chris.

This is a surreal shot. I love the contrast of the B&W tones and the composition works really well. It's a photo rich in things to explore. I just can't understand how you managed to get such long car light-trails with only 1/6 sec exposure and with f/22 at that! What time of day was it?

Beautiful result with 1/6 second shutter speed
The combination of B&W and the stripes of light is very good here
Good perspective as well
I will try it too
