Photographer's Note

This photo to me is ‘quintessential Vermont.’ It has the rivers, the farming and the mountains all included.
This photo was taken on route 105 in Sheldon, Vermont near the site of the Fenian Raids.
The Fenian Raids were an attempted invasion of Canada (which is to the north of Sheldon). In 1866 and 1870 two attempts were made to invade Canada. The Fenians, the name given to the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) wanted to secure an independent territory for Ireland where an ‘Irish Republic in exile’ would be established. On June 6, 1866 two thousand Fenians gathered in nearby St.Albans in an attempt to march into Canada. They were stopped at the border by Canadian and U.S. officials.
