Photographer's Note
Miami and Miami Beach are famous for so many things - among them, a huge Cuban-American community, great Art Deco architecture and gorgeous beaches.
One day, strolling down the beach, we found a series of what we thought were jellyfish, but a local corrected us by telling us that these were Portuguese man o' war, a marine cnidarian whose tentacles dangle far down into the water from the floating bladder which to me looks a lot like a sail in this photo.

Hello, great close up of the man o' war along the pretty white sand beaches of south Florida. Like your note says, my daughter and I were strolling along the beach in Miami and we thought they were jelly fishes. They are jelly like, but a different color and structure. The water is filled with them by the thousands but a few brave people were out swimming regardless.
The fin at the top does indeed act like a sail when out in the water.
Thanks for the post,
quite interesting,
Karen

At first i thougt also that it was a jelifish. It is beautiful but i know that this one is very very dangerous. For people the Portuguese Man o' War's sting is very painful, and sometimes causes death. Beautiful but dangerous!
Best regards
