Photographer's Note

The students and staff in the Smalley Group (run by Nobel Prize winner, Richard Smalley) here at Rice University, are on their way to setting a Guinness Book Record for creating the world's largest model of a nanotube.

Here's the blog for the project.

Unfortunately, I didn't hear about it until this morning (I should pay better attention, I guess), and I left my good camera at home. I borrowed my offices Nikon Coolpix E990 digital camera, and went down to photograph some of the process. This was taken around 10:20 this morning, when they were about half-done. The finished nanotube model (which should be around 1,300 feet long) will be carried this afternoon from Rice to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, probably about a half-mile away.

Here's a follow-up of part of the finished model.

I cropped the image a little, then adjusted the levels in Photoshop, and sharpened and resized it before uploading.
