Photographer's Note

Aniak is a village of under 700 people. Interesting fact: their school mascot is/are the 'Half Breeds.' They are very proud of the fact that their village is made-up of both Whites and Natives and they live without racism, something many villages are still dealing with. I found the town to be very clean, especially for a village. There are many jobs due to it being a 'hub' village: it has a large airstrip that services as a connection point for many small villages up and down river. This also provides many jobs, something most villages are lacking severely.

In Aniak there is only a Volunteer Fire Department to deal with any emergencies that may arise. To assist with any and all of these incidences are the DRAGON SLAYERS. It is a training program for high school kids to learn medical training and emergency response. The kids take it very seriously and are trained in many areas. They are even excused from school if their beeper should announce an emergency. They are AMAZING. They see things and help save lives in ways that most adults won't their entire life. I heard they have even appeared on Oprah and were given a new ambulance in turn. One of the toughest parts of the 'job' is the realization that in a town so small some one in the group is related to anyone who may be needing help.

This particular photo was taken north of the airstrip, the dividing point for the village to the east side, near 'the point.' This is the Aniak Lodge, or the OLD Aniak Lodge. I hear it is not really functional anymore and that the many who owns it has many cats, lives inside, and has lined the stairway with hundreds of Harlequin Love Novels.

Definitely an interesting place, but a great and easy place to visit for a village experience. Good hunting and nice views.
