Photographer's Note
This is my first picture to post on Trek Earth. I recently purchased a DSLR, For years I have used a film SLR. I like the ability of the DSLR to give immediate feedback as you change settings. I look forward to critiques to help improve my skills.
This picture was taken in Yellowstone NP at the Mammoth Hot Spring, temperture was about 15F and about 6800ft elevation. With the sun and snow I was using manual mode changing the exposure. This photo with the frozen steam, on the trees and rocks gave a different perspective.

hello John, and welcome to TE :)
excellent first post, I've never seen Yellowstone at this time of year, must've been quite surreal, same as your apt title. I like a lot how you've included both the snow covered trees and the steam rising from the ground, it nicely illustrates your note. I'd prefer a bit lighter shot, but that may be the monitor I'm looking at right now.
wishing you many great posts here,
Kristine

I like this shot also, there is a mysterious quality to it that captures the frozen spring. I also would prefer it a bit lighter and also the background horizon straightened. See the workshop I have posted.

Hello John,
Welcome to TE. Very nice winter shot. Composition Point of View and overall ambience is very good. May be a bit of brightness will enhance the image.
Well done with a good start.

Hello, John,
welcome to Trekearth. What a wonderful, mystical shot!! I love the way the light just catches a small part of the shot and lights it up beautifully. I like the way you have the snow covered branches scattered about, too. This is really beautiful! Fabulous start!! Thanks and best wishes,
Shelly

Hello John an dwelcome to TE. This is truly a beathtaking photo. It is quite difficult to capture such a good photo )even focusing in such conditions. A small tip by me would be when shooting at snow use +1 to your exposure settings to give you brighter and better results. The opposite (-1) when pointing on a black theme. Excellent photo and work!

Hello John. First cordially welcomely on Trekearth. Your first photo is worth seeing and from strange beauty. Landscape as from the fairy tale book. Wonderfully. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Welcome to TE, John.
This shot is rather unusual with its interesting subject. It's a great composition and the colour and light make the scene look quite eerie. I think it needs lightening and a tad more contrast, as it looks a little under-exposed here. Great first shot, though.

Andrew
