Photographer's Note

Here's another from the Jacksonville Beach Springing the Blues festival. This emotive and explosive guitarist is Zac Harmon. Zac wowed the crowd at Jax Beach that Sunday.

Zac was standing mostly in the shade with his guitar and hands in the bright spring Florida sunshine when I shot this, you can see the star shaped sun spots on the keys of his guitar - I noticed this would happen kind of by accident, so I cranked the aperture smaller to enhance the effect. I wanted to stop the action, too, as Zac moved constantly and had ever changing facial expressions. Of course, to achieve the correct exposure with these settings, the ISO (which I had set to auto) climbed to 800. Once I had the camera set up to capture the scene as I wanted it, all I had to do was wait for Zac to strike a pose with his guitar at the correct angle to the sun, recognize it as such and snap the photo.

If this sounds somewhat complicated, it was not - the new D7000 made setting it up quickly a breeze, and the high ISO not a problem due to the new sensor. I used only DXO Optics Pro for raw conversion and increasing the black level some, which gave a nice background on which to highlight Zac Harmon and his sparkling guitar.

Hope you like it - I wish I could embed some music in the shot so you could hear what it was like. You can hear a little of Zac's music on his web site if you click here. This link will open in a new window so you don't lose your place...

Have a great Monday!
