Photographer's Note

Funneled by the mountain passes, the Santa Ana winds gust up to 100 mph/60kph. They dry the air; fanning a spark to an inferno. Two friends have lost their homes to fires. In 2004, a fire spread so fast that 20 people lost their lives to the flames.

'The photo was taken before I joined TE and hadn't heard the advice to never leave home without a tripod. Since it was hand held, it lacks sharpness. Still it tells the story of the fires better than shots that are better techically. I dedicate the shot to those who have lost their homes to these fires.

In the WS, there's a photo of smoke billowing over a freeway that had been closed by the fire. Earlier this year, I posted a much 'prettier' shot of this fire.
