Wild Basin

Copeland Falls Trail - Wild Basin Area - Rocky Mountain National Park

Wild Basin is an area of Rocky Mountain National Park south of the main portion of the park. Every time I hike this area I think about how appropriate the name is. Often one finds oneself hiking through thick dark stands of lodge pole pine .. the wind rustling and creaking through the trees.

Your picture really has something mystic, something original ... the pattern of sunlit trunks and shades is astonishing and emphasizes this atmosphere. A photo not that much for the eyes but for the soul ...

It's not easy to take shots in forests, mainly because of how dark they are. Here you have captured the light on the trunks yet still managed to convey the density and mystery of the place, making it seem almost creepy. Well done

John, I have to agree with the foregoing critiques - light management under such conditions is certainly a challenge and you succeeded quite well, although I personally would have cleared it from the blue cast, but that might be intentionally set to give that almost creepy feeling. I did a WS to get back to a more "natural" look. Let me know what you think. ihope you approve it.

it is interesting photo about nature. Interesting composition. But I think is so dark? Light is not so good? But forest and all nature are beautiful.

Hi John,
What wonderful twisted pillars to this marvelous cathedral in the wild. The sparce light is painting each tree a little differently as their features are seen in fine detail.

Hi John, this has a very dark, wet feel to it, yet the sunlight can be seen dappling on the floor of the forest and on some of the trees. Light has been managed well. There's almost a "smoky" or misty feel to this one.
