Photographer's Note
I haven't ever seen a gold dragonfly. It really is this color ... 24kt gold. Does anyone know the name of this dragonfly? Only post processing was crop, resize - fade control, clarify and usm. Hope you like this! :)

Name I dont know but it is almost certainly a teneral form ( when freshly emerged they are not their final colours which come in a couple of days,I say this because of the glittering of the wings which usually fade and become clear. There are several very good web site for dragon flies including if I remember one at Texas State University.if you fail to put a name to it drop me a line and I will try again.
I would say you gave this quiet large crop to bring it up to size, and this has lead to a softening of the whole.

An interesting subject but not very sharp, which in not letting us appreciate it in its full. But the colours are amazing, I haven't either seen such a dragonfly. I usualy encounter green ones.

The page Robert's talking about must be this one. It also has links to other pages about dragonflies.
It's a pity this one isn't sharp, it's a very beautiful specimen ;-)
I see you got the D300, like me, and I suggest you try a much higher aperture next time, say F-13 or even F-16. Use just the middle focus point and fix focus on the back of the head / upper back, then keep your fingers crossed that the DOF will be sufficient to cover the entire dragonfly.
