Photographer's Note

Location: Sunrise at Mesa Arch with Washerwoman Arch in the background. This is the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park.

About the Photo: The intense glow on the underside of Mesa Arch only happens for a few minutes when the sun first rises. It is caused by the sunlight bouncing up off the cliff face under the arch. I have two other photos uploaded from this same morning but I thought I'd upload another since I'd already scanned and edited it a few years ago.

Velvia: In Memoriam. I haven't uploaded a Velvia photo in a long, long time. I used to love shooting Velvia. The colors you can achieve with the right lighting conditions are amazing. Unfortunately scanning Velvia slides is very difficult and it usually takes a lot of Post Processing to get the scan to match the slide. The hassle of scanning is what prompted me to switch to digital. Unfortunately I have found that editing RAW files takes just as much PP, and you don't have a beautiful slide in front of you to try to match it up with. Velvia was my first love in the world of photography. So I dedicate this photo to my old love, Velvia. I miss you.
