Photographer's Note

ENGLISH: St Saviour's Cathedral is situated in Church Street, Goulburn (original name for a street eh?). It has been a place of worship for Anglicans (Church of England) since the 1830s. The cathedral was designed in the Gothic style by Edmund Blacket in 1874, who was probably our most famous architect.

Blacket designed churches mostly in 2 styles of Gothic: English (for smaller churches) and Perpendicular (for grander buildings such as St Saviour's). He is responsible for the design of many of New South Wales' (particularly Sydney's) most beautiful buildings such as St Paul's, Burwood (1872), St Stephen's, Newtown (1874), All Saints', Woollahra (1874), St Peter's, East Maitland (1882), St Thomas's, North Sydney (1881), St Stephen's, Willoughby (1882), rectories such as those at Bega (1856) and Darling Point, Sydney (1858); St Paul's College, Sydney (1856); the Bank of Australasia in George Street, Sydney (1857), St John's, Glebe (1868), St Silas's, Waterloo (1868), and large parts of the University of Sydney (1854). See my previous postings of Sydney University entitled "For Sig. Wall" and "The Halls of Learning" to see Blacket's handiwork.
