Photographer's Note

The Birdsville track runs for 517 Km through harsh desert country from Birsdsville in Queensland to Marree (a good place to get tyres fixed!) in South Australia. Some people "do" the track in one day but much is to be seen by taking your time - ruins, colourful desert scenery and even the occasional waterhole. Mid way along the track is the Mungeranie pub - the only business along the way. It is a popular stopping point with waterhole side (with millions of mosquitoes) camping, and some very basic accommodation. The showers are hot due to the water being bore water but the water smells so much that most people given them a miss.
We stayed there overnight and this photo (scanned from negative) was taken as the shadows lengthened and the evening light set the sand hills aglow.
