Photographer's Note
A shot taken in Annerley, and inner southern suburb of Brisbane. Annerley still has a traditional main street, something lost in Australian cities with the advent of giant box-like airconditioned shopping centres.
Suffice to say, some main streets now struggle, as seen here, an old supermarket, still trading, is fading and grungy. One man alone sits outside, and on the wall is a notice that this shop will be torn down and redeveloped.
There is some life left on the main street in Annerley, with a few quirky cafes and second hand shops, and some African shops set up by new African migrants. The small business traders have to compete with large chains, and they are using service and character as a means to attract people back.

An overlooked image, in my opinion. There is social content here, not merely vacous prettinness. Wish you have gotten closer to the guy, or zoom more a bit. His despondent air fits the sign above, and contrasts with the sign of plenty in the background.

dear Justin,
maybe this atmosphere includes some important meanings,
but I simply feel the actual quiet ambience in common night scene,
he looks disappointed and meditating alone, but I cannot know his true story,
I only hear his still breathe in silent night street,
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

Hi Justin,
Nice B&W picture. I like the man on the left who looks a little bit sad. Beautiful scene of life. TFS

I agree with Christian. There is social content in it. I disagree with Christian that you should be closer. It would damage the story. The empty space around this sad man tells us something about his sadness. He sits averted which I feel to be a metaphor. The space around him enhances and visualize this effect. Well done. M.
