Photographer's Note

I present an amazing sight at Wau (pronounced wow)as the next instalment of my 1970s Papua New Guinea photos.
To get the scale have a look and you will see a man looking at this structure. It is a massive gold dredge but the most amazing aspect is that it is in an isolated part of PNG and every bit of the dredge (weight 2500 tons) was flown in Junkers planes in the 1930s - the biggest airlift ever at the time.
I have noticed in the Lonely Planet guide that since the 1970s they have been sold and broken up for scrap - a real pity given their size and location.
Scanned from a slide.
