Photographer's Note
This is a typical fishing boat from Southern Brazil, but it would be seen although Rio de Janeiro as well. Here, they were working in the waters of Paraná state, around 30-35 miles from the coast, and maybe 50-100 miles from their home-port, in Santa Catarina state.
How the fishermen work:
As soon as they found the school of fishes, they release the little boat to the water holding the other end of the large net. So, they turn around the school and close the net. Here, part of the big net is still in the water, keeping the school close to the boat, and they are using the little net, like a bag, to take the fishes from the large net.
I am posting this photo in colours here and the same one in sepia to the workshop area. I'm choosing the colours because I always love colours, but I would like to know which one you prefer. I really still don´t know which one I prefer..
I shoot f/3.5 because my poor cheap kit lens doesn´t work with high numbers anymore, due to its problem of error 99.
Regards,
Zeca

Hello Jose.
An excellent and very satisfying shot. I like the strong viewpoint in front of the boat, and the warm colour tones. In spite of being stuck with f/3.5, the depth of field is very good. I like the moment of capture, with the fishing net just being raised from the water. The composition is good, and the tight square crop works well with the subject. Yes, the sepia version is also good, but I prefer the colours, I think.
Very nice work.

Hi Jose
Don't know which one i prefer, to me the colors seem a little manipulated, almost too pink, maybe you didn't do anything to them, but still I lean more towards the B+W.
I see you have similar problems with your lens:) All my pictures from my last trip to UAE was really bad, like you I had to shoot with open aperture, which resulted in pictures that just didn't look sharp and crisp as I had preferred. Funny thing though that yours happened to the kit lens, was starting to wonder if it was a third party lens issue, as I have had it on my Tamron and now also on the sigma.
The Tamron I sent to cleaning, and it helped, and I believe I will do the same to the Sigma when I have the chance.
But your problem is dirty contacts, when you take the lens of, you will find a row of small cobber contacts on your lens, I read somewhere that you can clean them with a piece of pencil rubber, but be careful not to drop any parts of the rubber onto the glass or after wards into the camera.
I have tried it on my Sigma without success, but maybe you are more lucky.

Hello Jose,
Nice compo with that little orange boat next to the bigger vessel! And a very good note about closing in the school of fishes. Interesting!!
Error99... Yep. Well, the f/3.5 works for me here and the colour version is also preferred over the sepia. Nice!!

Hi Jose,
Not only good colours, but also a very good framing which leaves no space for things that don't matter. It's almost a kind of painting shot with these colours...i olike that a lot.

I was convinced I would prefer the colour version as that is my usual preference, but on viewing the sepia, I am now undecided as I like them both. You can still get good quality with only f3.5; DOF doesn't seem to be an issue at TE size and the boat is perfectly sharp. You do have quite a badly tilted horizon though! :D

a wonderful shot! looks like a painting more than a photo. i like the composition: nothing to take away, nothing to add. as to sepia, color choice. hmm... i'm not sure either. i like the reddish mood of the color one, but the sepia one let's us concentrate more on the boat. hmm... i like both.
what's that error 99?

You should have thrown in a black and white for good measure. I like the sepia version also, because it looks very close as you can get to Sepia toned. The reddish tones do stand out in this image and the nearly square crop you have chosen is well chosen. The harsh highlights in the sky are also complimenting to the scene. Very well done

Oi Zeca,

I definitely prefer the colour version, especially because of the pink cast and the contrast it creates with the blue details. the square format works very well here, since the position of the boat creates a nice diagonal line leading into the scene, the result is visually very pleasing and has a great 3D feeling. the smaller boat is a great colour accent, excellent work.

Hello Zeca, I prefer this version only because the colours are so beautiful, the contrasting blues & pinks, the reflection on the water all work very well & are lost in sepia. Excellent detail, no obvious problem here being stuck on 3.5. Interesting & informative note.
