Photographer's Note
Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water from a local subterranean stream. The highly salty water emerges at a spring, a natural outlet of the underground stream. The flow is directed into an intricate system of tiny channels constructed so that the water runs gradually down onto the several hundred ancient terraced ponds.

Buongiorno Federico,
Fantastic photo of high terrain view of the salt-pans scene. Beautiful nature "sculptures" with the little "help" from men building those terraces.
Fine contrast to the green and brown slopes, good depth collected towards the far horion valley we see.
Have a nice day, arrivederci,
Ike

Hello Federico,
I had no idea that salt was gained by this method in Peru. Certainly TE educates us in the most visually attractive way.
A fine viewpoint, concentrating on the salt ponds, with the overlapping mountains as a wonderful context. the contrasting light adds further interest.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Federico
This is a very interesting point of view that brings added relief to the scenery. Many photos of this site (including mines) look flat, not this one. The light of the sun on the red and green hill side on the right adds a lot.

Hi Federico. I never knew of such a thing in high altitudes. Incredible sight so well caught from your POV and with excellent exposure. So many centuries of hard work by countless men in order to ensure health and prosperity for one's community. Quite a moving image, a tribute to human resilience. Regards. Klaudio.
