The Theatre of the Eighth Day (Poland)The Time of Mothers

The production is a story of a contemporary woman and mother, or rather mothers who give life and carry out the unique miracle of birth. Ritual, joyous, magic, lyrical and tender beginnings of human existence are their creation and achievement. However, later on they are the ones who suffer the greatest of all disasters. They experience the inevitable loss of the being they had once embraced. This is how the metaphysics of the birth-giving act is opposed to the overwhelming flimsiness and anonymity of death.

Women, however, rebel against that loss, against their role of birth-givers to cannon-fodder, as well as the roles of prophets and heroines. Women want the miracle of normality and continuity. Women unite in defence of life and against loss. The performance is designed as a series of images and events performed in a multilevel space. The story is told with the use of both grotesque and dramatic language.

The Theatre of the Eighth Day is one of the most important experimental theatre groups. It has created over forty original productions performed almost everywhere in Europe as well as in Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, Brasil, Singapore and South Korea. The group has also taken part in significant international theatre projects, such as the Caravane Mir in 1989 and Oral Expos: Lisbon 1968 and Hannover 2002. Since 1992 the groupe has had its own home in the heart of Poznan. It is one of the most important centres of independent culture in Poland.
