Rural House "Campidanese" (year 1700)

The house Campidanese is undoubtedly one of the most interesting of the Sardinian folk architecture.
In the villages of Campidano (the vast plain of Sardinia, located in the south-west of the island) and also in the hinterland of Cagliari you can still find this type of houses that are still in perfect condition.

The house was surrounded by high walls to ensure privacy and access consisted of a wooden portal with two doors that open, and included a smaller door for the access of people.
Inside a large courtyard with lemon and orange trees, which opened on the workplace:
stables, warehouses, mills stone and cellars.
In this yard was always a well of water, because the house had to be self-sufficient.
On one side of the courtyard a portico with arches "sa lolla."
It is the lodge that serves as a link between the various rooms of the house, livingroom, bedroom, kitchen.
”Sa lolla” is the structure that gives shape to the whole house and is the main feature of the “Campidanese” home.
All these rooms are so on the ground floor, while the first and only upper floor, with wooden floor boards, was used as a warehouse for food or as a barn.

Another major feature of the “Campidanese” house is the material they are made: bricks (ladiri) obtained by drying a mixture of straw and clay mud.
It 'amazing but the rooms are cool in summer and warm in winter.
The roof, often supported by trusses and beams of juniper, is made with the Sardinian tiles, attached, with mortar of clay and straw, to the subroof of bundles of reeds tied together with plant fibers for good thermal insulation.

If you want you can look at my WORKSHOP where I tried to show some common features of these “Campidanesi” houses , found in the Sotgiu house in Sinnai (CA) which I visited.
