Photographer's Note

I was walking along the shore in Phuket, Thailand and this style of fishing boat was sporadically positioned along the coast. Sadly, Phuket is where the Tsunami from 2004 came ashore and took the lives of many people. I was there 3 years after that horrible day and there were still hundreds of photos and notes lining the shore, tied to trees and fences, remembering those that died. The hotel I stayed in was still in the process of being completed as it had been demolished by the wave. And along the streets, you'd see Tsunami escape route signs posted letting you know the best way to run. I definitely felt a sadness while standing on the beach, yet these fishing boats were a reminder that life had continued, people were rebuilding their lives,& going back to work. While the sea had been the source of grief and tragedy, it is also a source of daily life and provision for the families that work on it.
