Photographer's Note

This is a bit different perspective than another photo of the same subject I posted a while ago. Independence, Missouri is the fourth largest city in the state, and is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. It has a population of about 110,000. The town is known as the Queen City of the Trails because it was a point of departure of the California, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. The area was once inhabited by Missouri and Osage tribes, followed by the Spanish. It was a part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803; Lewis and Clark recorded that they stopped in the area in 1804 to pick plums, raspberries and wild apples in the area during their travels. The city was founded on March 29, 1827 and became an important frontier town. It is the farthest point west on the Missouri River, where steamboats and cargo vessels could travel because of the convergence of several major waterways, including the Kansas River. The town is also closely associated with the Latter Day Saint movement; founder Joseph Smith declared a spot west of the Courthouse Square to be the site of his prophesied temple of the New Jerusalem, but the group was driven out of the area in 1833. Several branches of the movement returned, however, including the Community of Christ, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints) and various restoration branches. The town is also famous as the boyhoood home of Harry S. Truman, who grew up in Independence; his wife was also born there. Both are buried there and the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum are located there. There's a walking trail that takes visitors to various sites associated with the 33rd US President. It's a great and historic little town, well worth a visit.
