Zebra Longwing Butterfly, Bronx Zoo, Bronx, New York

This butterfly was photographed at the Bronx Zoo Butterfly Garden nectaring on a large purple-pink Echinacea flower. It is a black butterfly with yellow-white stripes.

The Zebra Longwing butterfly is very unique butterfly. I have difficulties to get shots from certain angles to show that the wings are symmetrical as possible. I don’t know if it’s because of its color/pattern but I can’t find the right angle of light that looks best on the butterfly unless I’m very close to the butterfly and shoot parallel to the ground.

Never underestimate the importance of knowing your subject! :)

Great shot - I get the sense that this picture required much determination and patience on your part. Well cropped and the colours seem almost muted - but it works very well.

Actually it looks like one wing is bigger than the other. Anyway is a beautiful picture. And how lucky you were able to get the butterfly with the wings opened. Nice done!!!
