Photographer's Note

During the low tide at St.Ives this skilled painter slowly produces a beautiful re-creation of the beach scene. Generously he allows me to photograph him doing his work.
After I had walked around the harbour wall on the left of the shot, the tide had turned and luckily for this man he had expertly timed his working speed, so by the time the water was moving his subject all he had to do was a few colour changes. Doubly lucky as it began to rain steadily by the turn of the tide also.

This is a nice daily life shot of a man putting his vision on canvas. You might think about cropping out the red ball on the left to see how you like it.

Timing is neded to produce a good painting as well with all the light and tide changes it seems.

Hi James, there's something very appealing about this image, a nice balance between the different subjects. Great detail in his canvas and umbrella, good colour and an excellent POV. Good photo!

This is a excellent capture and compostion. I agree with zips that the red ball on the left is distracting. I may go down a little lower so that the umbrella clears the platform and only have the sky as its background. In this way you can reduce more of the sky and put more emphasis on the painter. I like this daily life shot,which is technicaly well done,but what I like most is that this situation is one of a kind,and is like seing a picture inside a picture.
Good composition with a good light management.

A very nicely composed image - the scale of the scene really sets back against the work of the painter - showing us what attracted him - and us - that fantastic mythic reality of St Ives light - I think I might be inclined to letterbox this image further by heavily cropping it from the top (as another version) really to just above the man's head - this would also remove some of the burn in the sky to the right ......and also increase his impact as a foreground element and presenting a more filmic image.....could be cropped a little higher too......

Very nice picture James, your "Sign-writer", but I prefer this beautiful "Artist&Subject".
You did not need the flash and made the most of the sun light !

Hello James,

I like this one because it's a lovely moment. The size of the canvas intrigues me, the great vista and the relative postage stamp to capture it on. The sky is artistically watercolour in appearance. I would've been tempted to exclude the red ball on the left, but I am a monochrome mutineer.
