Photographer's Note

There are quite a few striking elements in this photo: we arrived quite early in the morning, and Herculaneum is much less touristy than Pompeii, as it's probably about a fifth of the size. There were very few people walking around so you really got an eerie feeling that it was a "ghost town." Many of the buildings have been reconstructed to some degree, which you can see here, but you can also see from the structures above how far below the ground the ancient town now lies. The structures in the background were constructed after the last eruption in 1944/5, but this also illustrates how much material once covered the ruined town.
