Presentiment, a photo from Basel Land, Ouest

Photographer's Note

A premonition of days to come… after a preview of spring, winter is due back any time now, and over the coming days we may see some snow.

I took this shot a couple of months ago on a strangely still night when flakes were still falling from the sky and the earth was deadened to any sound. The sky glowed eeriely with a sense of expectation.

This is just a scene from a playground in my street, but on this night the atmosphere was rather special. Taken just after 9pm and long after sunset, the colours are natural, no filters and no PP alterations.

I guess the artificial lights of the city (especially streetlights) are the source of the beautiful color! That's unusual, because usually these tones are destructive to night shots. I really like the placement of the tree against the sky--somehow the mixture of dark branches and white snow against the brightest part of the orange sky works really well. Very nice, Susanna! Susanna,
As you say, a slightly eerie shot - and I'm very glad you used that word yourself as I had no idea how to spell it!
Of course, I like the tree best of all, it's what makes the shot special.
I expect you've got bags of resolution to play with, and if this was on my pc - with all that resolution - I'd probably have made a little crop - well a big crop - and just had a tree and sky abstract thingy! ;)

Hi Susanna, lovely atmospheric shot, you can really feel the lovely softness and silence of a snow covered scene, abd i love the quiet warn glow of the lights eminating from the dwellings, reminding us the warmth and cosiness of modern life which makes winter in such a cold place bearable, even enjoyable,and which i s'pose we often take for granted

You're probably right that it's going to look like this tomorrow. It's a pity for all the flowers which are in bloom. Plus I wanted to put away my winter clothes.
I always like the special orange light on the soft powder. Excellent contrast between the snow and the branches. I like the placement of the tree.

Ca me fait bizarre de voir cette dominante rouge dasn une photo de neige, on dirait que t'as confondu le filtre UV avec le Cokin Sunset ;-)
Mais oui oui oui elle est enfin annoncee et moi la semaine prochaine je suis au SKI !!!

L'allure de cet arbre frise le surnaturel ! J'ai l'impression d'être sur le plateau d'un film de science-fiction !
La prise de vue est excellente et cet arbre se découpant dans ce ciel orangé donne un splendide contraste !

This really is a strange and eerie scene. The colours are amazing and I would have suspected the use of a tinted filter, if you hadn't said not. The composition works well, with the tree filling the bottom left half and the angles of the fence, supported by the hills on the right and the buildings on the left sweeping down into that section. It makes for a tight, organized composition.The distant lights might be a bit distracting, but are are an impoortant point of interest , too. It's a very attractive image.

Wow, spectacular atmosphere, Susanna. Very impressive natural colors and lighting. It looks a very surreal night, like a scene from a sci-fi movie. The composition is very good, with the tree and all its naked branches adding much dramatism against that incredible sky. Even the distorted perspective of the house works with the mood. Great shot!

This must have been wonderful to see in reality. The colour is so unusual and as you say very eerie. I love how the snow-laden branches etch themselves across the orange sky. Amazing!
