Photographer's Note

An old devotee pays her respects to Goddess Ganga as the Sandhya Aarti (Evening Worship) comes to an end. There is no dearth of worshippers and photographers as one can see. A handheld night shot without flash.
Ganga Aarti on the banks of the river in Varanasi is a truly spectacular event. The actual ceremony starts at 7 pm but people start arriving at the ghats as early as 5 pm. Dasaswamedh ghat becomes a hub of activity, with people sitting and waiting for the aarti, buying flowers and other things from nearby shops or performing pooja. Floating candles, flowers are released into the river. The daily event involves a group of young hindu priests choreographing to the chantings, holding the lamps. This is an elaborate ceremony involving lots of fire and incense.
