Stepwells (Baoli or Vav), are wells in which the water can be reached by descending a set of steps. In late 6th early 7th cen. Gujarat, masons dug deep trenches into the earth to reach dependable, year-round groundwater. Building upward, they lined the walls of the trenches with huge stone blocks, laid without mortar, and paved the slope of each trench with stone stairs leading up from the water.
